Since Juanma Moreno assumed the presidency of the Junta de Andalucía in 2019, the community has experienced a significant reduction in the number of people on the unemployment lists, ranking as one of the leading regions in Spain. According to the most recent data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Andalusia has gone from 834.300 unemployed at the end of 2018 to 652.700 at the end of 2024.
This means that, in six years of management of the Popular Party Government, led by Juanma Moreno, 181.600 people have left the unemployment lists, a figure that equates to 82 people a day finding work. The unemployment rate has also dropped considerably, going from 21,26% to 15,76%.
74.800 fewer unemployed in 2024
During the 2024 year, Unemployment in Andalusia decreased by 74.800 people, which represents a 10,3% drop compared to the previous year. This improvement coincides with an increase in employment, as 86.100 new jobs were created, an increase of 2,53% compared to 2023. At the end of the year, the community registered 3.488.500 employed people.
The fourth quarter of 2024 also showed positive symptoms, with a runemployment reduction by 17.700 people and an unemployment rate of 15,76%. This figure represents the lowest level of unemployment recorded in a fourth quarter since 2007.
Women and youth unemployment
By sex, The decrease in unemployment has been more noticeable among women, with 17.100 fewer unemployed women (-4,7%) in the last quarter of 2024, compared to a reduction of only 500 men (-0,2%). Thus, the total number of unemployed women stood at 345.100, with a female unemployment rate of 18,16%, while the number of unemployed men was 307.600, with a rate of 13,73%.
Youth unemployment also showed significant improvements. The number of unemployed people under 25 years of age decreased by 12.300 people in the last three months of the year.
Youth unemployment has been one of the priority areas of the Government of Juanma Moreno. Since 2019, The youth unemployment rate has fallen by 8,85 points, a significant step forward for a region that has historically faced major challenges in this segment of the population. According to the most recent figures, the number of unemployed young people under 25 years of age fell by 12.300 people during the last quarter of 2024, which highlights the effectiveness of the measures adopted to encourage youth employment. Creating youth employment means creating opportunities, a future and establishing a population in the territory.
Regarding the type of contract, INE data shows that Permanent employment has gained ground in Andalusia. During the fourth quarter, the number of employees with permanent contracts increased by 26.800 people. This brought the total number of employees to 2.932.400, of which 80,42% had permanent contracts (2.358.200 people).
Employment policies of the Andalusian Government
The decline in unemployment in Andalusia in recent years has been attributed in part to the Active employment policies promoted by the Andalusian Government, focused on training, fostering youth employment and promoting permanent contracts. Juanma Moreno's administration has placed emphasis on public-private collaboration and attracting foreign investment, with the aim of diversifying the regional economy and reducing its dependence on traditional sectors.
