Andalusia is betting on biogas on its path to leadership in renewable energy

Juanma Moreno bets on biogas
The President of the Andalusian Government, Juanma Moreno, has announced a pioneering alliance to promote biogas and biomethane, with a roadmap drawn up together with the sector. During his speech at the ABC Alter Enersun Forum, Moreno underlined Andalusia's capacity to become a benchmark in renewable energies, with great potential in photovoltaics and green hydrogen. In addition, he highlighted the need for state support to improve the electric transport network and facilitate a green industry that generates employment and reindustrialisation in the region, promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Juanma Moreno bets on biogas

The President of the Andalusian Regional Government, Juanma Moreno, has announced that on November 15th in Jaén an Alliance for the development of biogas and biomethane will be signed, in direct collaboration with the sector. According to Moreno, renewable energies represent a unique opportunity to generate employment and prosperity in the region.

Need for improvements in the electric transport network

At the ABC Alter Enersun Forum held in Huelva, Moreno stressed that Andalusia needs a denser energy transport network to better exploit its capacities. This will require the support of the Spanish Government, since the current network is 40% below the peninsular average. According to the president, investments of 544 million have already been proposed to improve these infrastructures, especially in areas with less investment.

Andalusia: clean energy and green jobs for the future

Moreno stressed that the region has the potential to lead the transition to clean energy, with a focus on green job creation and public-private partnerships. Projects with Cepsa and Alter Enersun, which include ten photovoltaic plants and a wind farm, are expected to generate 2.000 jobs in the region.

Rise of foreign investment in renewable energy

The president also highlighted the increase in foreign investment in renewable energy in Andalusia, with 77 projects between 2019 and 2024, reaching 20.145 billion euros. This investment represents almost 60% of all foreign investment in this period.

Key projects in green hydrogen and the vision of self-sufficiency

Moreno highlighted the role of Andalusia in green hydrogen projects, with 23 initiatives and an estimated investment of 5.300 billion. He highlights the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley project, led by Cepsa, which involves an investment of more than 3.000 billion and will generate 10.000 jobs, one thousand of them direct.

Financial support and opportunities for decarbonisation

The Andalusian Government will allocate 66 million euros in business incentives, supporting renewable energy and green hydrogen projects. Among the 136 priority projects, 72 correspond to the renewable sector, promoting the decarbonisation of key industrial sectors in Huelva.

Andalusia leads in national photovoltaic power

With 61% of installed clean energy capacity, Andalusia is the leader in photovoltaic power in Spain. In the first half of 2024, the community added 700 MW of photovoltaic energy, reaching a total capacity of 12.500 MW in renewable energy.

Economic impact of renewables in Andalusian municipalities

Moreno stressed that renewables benefit municipalities economically, with guaranteed income from licenses and fees. In addition, each plant contributes 150.000 euros annually in local taxes. Andalusia's goal is to end this legislative period with an additional 12 GW of clean energy, consolidating its position as a leader in renewables.

Target: 75% renewable energy by 2030

Moreno concluded that Andalusia's goal is to achieve 75% of energy generation from renewable sources by 2030.
