[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Coripe, a small town in the Sierra Sur of Seville, has become the center of national attention after the recognition of its emblematic Chaparro de la Vega as the most beautiful tree in Spain in 2024. This impressive example of holm oak, which has at least 400 years of history, has obtained the distinction in a competition organized by the NGO Forests Without Borders, receiving 3.715 votes.
It should also be noted that Chaparro de la Vega has surpassed two other prominent competitors from the autonomous community of Andalusia: The swamp cypress Becquer Roundabout in the María Luisa Park in Seville (3.429 votes) and the himalayan cedar from Jerez de la Frontera (2.690 votes).
José Godino proud of the recognition of Chaparro de la Vega as the most beautiful tree in Spain
The mayor of Coripe, José Godino, expressed his gratitude and pride for this achievement that not only celebrates the natural beauty of the tree, but also its cultural and community significance. El Chaparro de la Vega, declared a natural monument since 2001, is a symbol of the local community and a meeting point for festivities such as the pilgrimage of the Virgin of Fátima.
This tree is notable not only for its age and impressive size – with a trunk more than one meter in diameter and a crown of 28 meters – but also for its role in the lives of the inhabitants of Coripe and its surroundings.
The recognition obtained by Chaparro de la Vega transcends the local. The Provincial Council of Seville, through its spokesperson Martín Torres Castro, has congratulated Coripe for an initiative that highlights the importance of the province's green heritage. This award has led the mayor to consider the possibility of breaking the Guinness record, which Chaparro already held in the nineties by hosting 2.000 people under its glass.
Contest objectives
The Tree and Forest of the Year competition in Spain, started in 2007, seeks to highlight the country's unique trees and forests as valuable natural and cultural heritage. In it, beauty, size or age are secondary to the history and relationship of these living beings with the community. El Chaparro de la Vega is not only a magnificent specimen due to its physical characteristics, but it is also a center of community life, reflecting the close relationship between nature and people in this part of Spain.
With this award, Coripe and his Chaparro de la Vega not only gain national recognition, but also prepare to represent Spain in the European competition in search of the most beautiful tree, bringing its history and natural beauty to a broader stage.
This achievement is a testament to the care and respect that the residents of Coripe have for their natural environment, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and valuing our green heritage.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][ vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
