New frequencies and adapted schedules on the Granada AVE
The Granada Madrid AVE, which until now offered three daily frequencies, has incorporated a fourth journey with the arrival of an Alvia 730 series train, a hybrid with features similar to high-speed trains. This new service leaves Granada at 11:15 in the morning and allows a travel time of 3 hours and 42 minutes, slightly longer than the Granada AVE, but at a more affordable price.
Renfe has also modified the schedules of the Granada AVE at 19:25 hours, which now leaves at 18:15, and the Madrid-Granada AVE at 14:35, brought forward to 13:35. In addition, the first train leaves from Granada at 06:55 and the last one at 18:22 during working days. These adjustments aim to improve flexibility for travellers and adapt the service to their mobility needs.
A joint effort to improve connections
The investment made in railway developments such as the Loja Variante and the new Andaluces Station are key to ensuring Granada's competitiveness. Furthermore, the gauge changer, already in operation, allows the sliding track trains to connect directly with Almería without having to make transfers in Granada.
The PP of Andalusia and the PP of Granada have played a fundamental role in this progress. Through Parliamentary initiatives presented in Congress and the Senate, the deputies Lourdes Ramírez and Inmaculada Hernández have demanded Improvements in the frequency, speed and quality of rail serviceRamírez stressed the importance of listening to the people of Granada, after more than 11.000 signatures were collected to demand improvements.
Environmental benefits and sustainability
The new Granada Madrid AVE offers Competitive advantages over other means of transport such as airplanes, buses and carsWith a journey time of 3 hours and 25 minutes, the Granada AVE is a fast and efficient option, with prices starting at 51 euros per journey. It also allows you to work on board and has stable connections.
The fastest option is still by plane, with a total journey time of 2 hours and 25 minutes, although its cost can exceed 200 euros. The bus is the cheapest alternative, with a price of 24 euros per journey, but its 5-hour duration makes it the slowest option. The car offers greater flexibility and time freedom, but is expensive due to fuel consumption and parking in Madrid, as well as being the second most polluting option.
The Granada Madrid AVE not only improves connectivity, but also represents a sustainable optionCompared to planes and cars, trains are the least polluting option and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The introduction of hybrid trains such as the Alvia allows high speed to be extended to non-electrified sections, optimising energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A historic claim from Granada
The new rail service is the result of years of demands by Granadan society and the business sector, which have demanded higher frequencies and faster connections. Inmaculada Hernández has criticised the Government's lack of action in recent years and has urged continued work to achieve direct high speed services without intermediate stops.
This progress, however, is just one more step. The PP representatives have highlighted the need to address other pending projects in the province, such as the connection with the Mediterranean Corridor and the completion of key infrastructures. With these improvements, the Granada AVE consolidates its position as an essential means of economic development and sustainable mobility in Andalusia.
