The Elections to the European Parliament or European Elections will be held in Spain on June 9, 2024 (date pending confirmation by the Government by royal decree). The minimum voting age is 18 years old. Spanish citizens residing in Spain or abroad, as well as citizens of other EU countries residing in Spain, can vote in them.

What are the European Elections

The elections to European Parliament, also known as european elections, are the process by which citizens of the Member States of the European Union (EU) elect the deputies who will represent their interests in the European Parliament. These elections are held every five years and are one of the largest transnational democratic exercises in the world. Here are some key points about this election:

  1. Democratic Representation: Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are directly elected by EU citizens, giving them a democratic mandate to represent citizens' interests in EU decisions.
  2. Voting Process: Voting method and electoral systems may vary from country to country within the EU, but they all follow certain common principles, such as proportional representation.
  3. Importance of the European Parliament: This institution plays a crucial role in EU legislation, working together with the Council of the European Union to approve, amend or reject laws proposed by the European Commission. It also plays an important role in the EU budget and in issues such as international trade, environmental regulation and consumer rights.
  4. Citizen participation: European elections are an opportunity for EU citizens to influence political direction and decisions that affect the entire union. Participation in these elections has varied over time, being a topic of interest for political analysts and EU institutions.
  5. Political Groups: MEPs generally join together in transnational political groups representing different political spectrums and ideologies, reflecting the political diversity of the European Union.
  6. Impact on National and EU Policy: European Parliament elections can also have a significant impact on the national politics of Member States, as well as on the general direction of EU policy.

In short, European Parliament elections are an essential component of the governance of the European Union, providing a mechanism for citizens to directly influence decision-making at European level.
